Where Happiness Reigns
photograph series, glitch
I’m definitely reminiscent. I like the idea of a glitch breaking down an image, making it unreadable, to be symbolic of fading memory. Something that’s lost, or begining to be lost. This concept was further inspired by Pip & Pop’s When Happiness Ruled - trying to capture a time, as the title says, when happiness ruled.
The images take the height of my happiness (going to a playhouse, obviously) and capture what I actually remember - a blur of bright colours and patterns. Despite most of these images being taken on different days, they all somewhat merge into one. Even though the images are focused on myself, I hope that others can relate - sort of see themselves in the images and feel like it's their own memories.
Through the glitch process, I used the sliding stretch effect to create this fuzzy blur, like in movies when they fade into a dream. I then used the invert effect to create horizontal lines towards the bottom of the image, like an old tape sill loading. Whether or not these direct references came across, I’m not sure, but they still captured a physical image of my memory.
